Is it permissible to marry someone whom the mother breastfed 17 years ago, and she does not remember whether the feedings were sufficient or their number?

It is advisable to avoid marrying this relative and to consider it forbidden in marriage, and to treat the person as a stranger in seclusion and travel, in order to avoid doubts, especially since some scholars have not specified the number of sucklings for prohibition. This is supported by the hadith of 'Uqbah ibn al-Harith, who separated from his wife when it was said that the nursing mother had suckled them both, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "How could it be when it has been said!?" This indicates taking precautions. Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah mentioned that doubt about the truthfulness of the nursing mother or the number of sucklings makes the matter one of doubt, and avoiding it is more appropriate.
