What this is
El Fatwa is a library of fatwas that have already been published on ftawy.com, made readable and findable in English.
El Fatwa and Ftawy are run by the same owner. Ftawy publishes the answers; El Fatwa organizes them and links each one to its full text on Ftawy. Both draw on the work of the sharia, fatwa, research and scholarly committees of Waqf Iqraa, a research center.
195,634 answers are published here, all of them sourced from ftawy.com. Each one has its own page, its own web address, and a link to the full original.
It is free to read. There are no ads and no third-party trackers, because no outside script is allowed to run on the site.
Who it is for
Someone with a real question and little time. Think of a person in an airport at two in the morning, reading in a second language. They need one clear thing they can act on.
So the answer comes first, the evidence second, and the source is always named.
What this is not
Not a fatwa council. El Fatwa issues no rulings. Every ruling on the site was issued elsewhere, by the source, and we say who.
Not a scholar's desk. The answers were not written at El Fatwa: the team described below prepared them, and El Fatwa's sharia committee checks them. We never present anything here as if a scholar had written it for El Fatwa.
Not a substitute for asking. A published answer speaks to the question it was asked. Your own situation may differ, and an answer cannot know that.
Not a search engine over the whole internet. One source, one link out, nothing else.
Who wrote the answers
All of the answers were prepared by a specialized scholarly, sharia and research team of students of fiqh and the sharia sciences who completed postgraduate studies at Umm al-Qura University and the Islamic University of Madinah, under the care and supervision of senior scholars and professors at the Islamic University.
The English text on Ftawy was translated by sharia students, on scholarships and from different communities, under the supervision of professors at the Islamic University of Madinah. El Fatwa did not translate the answers; their translations come from Ftawy's records.
Who checks the material
El Fatwa's sharia committee verifies all the material on the site, guides and summaries alike. Its members are postgraduate students of sharia and comparative fiqh, specialized sharia researchers.
Who writes the guides
Our blog posts, collections and season guides carry one byline: The Fatwa Scholarly Team. It names the site's editorial process, not one person. These explainers are written through that process. Every claim about a ruling cites a published answer on this site. The full source of that answer is on ftawy.com. The byline names no individual scholar. The rulings belong to the muftis whose answers are cited.
Two names appear on this site, and they are two different bodies. The Fatwa Scholarly Team is the author byline on the guides: blog posts, collections and season guides. El Fatwa's sharia committee verifies all the material on the site, guides and summaries alike.
Languages
English is the main language and sits at the root of the site. Other languages live under their own prefix, and a page exists in a language only when that language's content exists. We do not machine-fill a language to look complete.
How to read a page
Every answer names its source before you read it. Under the answer, the source card says "Summary from Ftawy's records" and, when the page has a date, "added here" with that date: the day the answer was added to this site, not the date of the fatwa.
If this page and the full answer on Ftawy ever disagree, the full answer wins. Tell us, and we will fix the page and log it.
