Is it permissible for a man who has issued a revocable divorce to reconcile with his wife after telling her: "I will not marry you again; go marry someone else"?

The waiting period (iddah) for a divorced woman is three menstrual cycles for those who menstruate, three months for those who have despaired of menstruation (i.e., menopausal) or are young, and upon delivery for a pregnant woman. Once the waiting period ends, the woman becomes irrevocably divorced, and no new divorce can be issued against her. However, if she is still within the waiting period of a revocable divorce, a new divorce can be issued against her. A man's statement to his wife, "Go and get married," is an allusive expression (kinayah) and does not effect divorce unless intended.

If you intended divorce with these words and repeated them, she has become irrevocably divorced from you (bainunah kubra), and she is not lawful for you unless she marries another man, he consummates the marriage with her, and then he divorces her or dies, and her waiting period ends. This is the view of the majority of scholars. Some scholars hold that consecutive divorces issued without a new marriage contract or reconciliation are counted as a single divorce. However, if you did not intend a new divorce but rather intended to confirm the previous divorce, then no new divorce takes place. If the divorces were not three, you can reconcile with your wife before her waiting period ends.
