Is selling gold on deferred payment to relatives and friends forbidden (haram), and would refusing to do so cause a severance of kinship ties (qati’at al-rahim)?

It is not permissible to sell gold for money except by taking possession [of the payment] in the same session. This must be explained to the buyer, and that doing so is not to question their trustworthiness, but rather to follow the Sharia. Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen was asked about the ruling on giving out gold before receiving its price, and he answered that selling gold for dirhams is not permissible unless the full price is received, and there is no difference between a relative and a stranger, for in God's religion, no one is shown favoritism. If a relative becomes angry at obedience to God, then let him be angry, for he is the wrongdoer.
