Is it permissible to participate in a housing cooperative financed by a company in agreement with a usurious bank, where the company pays the usurious interest and the workers are responsible for paying only the principal of the debt?
The bank is considered a lender when it finances house construction, and it is not permissible for it to stipulate an increase on the loan. This increase is usury (riba) by the consensus of scholars, and every benefit stipulated for the lender makes the contract unlawful. Therefore, it is not permissible to agree to this transaction, even if the company undertakes to pay the interest, because that involves assisting in what is forbidden. Allah Almighty said: "And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty" (Al-Ma'idah: 2).
