How can one get rid of the pleasure of showing off (riya') and acquire a tranquil or self-reproaching soul?

The Muslim is required to purify himself and cleanse it from the ailments that corrupt it and distance it from Allah. Souls are divided into several categories:

- The Tranquil Soul (An-Nafs Al-Mutma'innah): This is the most complete and highest-ranking of souls in goodness. It is mentioned in the verse: "O tranquil soul! Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him]." It is the soul that is calm, certain, and content with Allah's decree. Its characteristics can be acquired by sincere monotheism, contentment with divine decree, belief in meeting Allah, and satisfaction with His bestowal. - The Reproaching Soul (An-Nafs Al-Lawwamah): This is the soul that reproaches its owner for both good and evil, or it is the soul of the believer who holds himself accountable for shortcomings in obedience and falling into sins. It can be acquired by holding oneself accountable for desires, sins, and shortcomings in acts of obedience.
