Is it permissible to dye hair red, and if not, what is the evidence for that?

It is permissible to dye hair red. Evidence for this is found in the Hadith: "The best things with which to change this gray hair are henna and katam." It has been authentically reported that the Salaf dyed their hair with henna, among them Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him.
