What is the ruling on calling a scholar by the word "'Allamah" (great scholar)?

"Allamah" is an intensified form of "alim" (scholar), meaning "the very learned scholar." It is used to praise those who excel in knowledge. It is a condition that the person described by it must truly be a scholar; it is not permissible to apply it to an ignorant person. If a person becomes renowned for knowledge and possesses knowledge with its evidence, he is called an "alim." If his knowledge becomes widespread and its benefit extends throughout the Ummah, he is then called an "Allamah."
