Is it obligatory to allocate more than a quarter of one's salary to repay past debts and compensations for theft, or is allocating a quarter sufficient?
Funds must be paid back to their owners to clear one's liability, if seeking their halal (permission) is not possible. The default is that repayment should be immediate. However, if sufficient funds are only available from one's salary, then whatever can be paid from it must be paid, whether it is half, a third, a quarter, or more or less. One is not obligated to pay what is needed for their basic necessities like food, clothing, and housing. Ibn Qudamah said: "Because repaying debt is only obligatory from what is surplus to one's sustenance."
