Is it permissible to trade goods acquired with ill-gotten money?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Whoever acquires merchandise through unlawful means does not own it and is not permitted to dispose of it by selling or other means. It is forbidden for anyone who knows this to purchase it from him. He must return it to its owner, and if the owner is deceased, then to his heirs. If he is unable to do so, he should spend it for the benefit of the Muslims. If he has disposed of it by selling and cannot recover it, he must provide an equivalent if it is a fungible item, or its value if it is not fungible, and he must repent to Allah.
