Is it permissible to stop praying in congregation at the mosque due to the imam's errors in Tajwid and vocalization?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

If the Imam commits a melodic error (laḥn) in the Fatiha that alters its meaning, then it is impermissible to follow him in prayer. However, if the melodic error does not change the meaning, but rather impairs the recommended tajwid (elocution), then praying behind him is permissible. The brother is advised to be keen on praying in the mosque if the Imam does not commit such errors, or to pray in another mosque behind an Imam who is proficient in recitation, due to the virtue of congregational prayer in mosques. Scholars have differed concerning the ruling on congregational prayer, and the most preponderant opinion is that it is obligatory, and it is best that it be performed in the mosque.
