Raising cats at home is permissible. If they are confined, they must be fed, or they should be left to eat from the creatures of the earth. They are pure, and their leftover water (su'r) is pure and not disliked. However, their urine and droppings are impure. Prayer is valid in a place where a cat sat, but it is not valid in a place where it urinated or defecated before it is purified by pouring water over it. As for a prayer rug, it must be washed with water. The general rule for places is purity, and prayer is permissible in a place suspected of impurity as long as one is not certain of it.
