Is it permissible to listen to mawawil?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Mawawil (folk singing) can be a complaint about the vicissitudes of time, or the change of companions, or a declaration of love and passion. If sung by a woman to men, or by men to women, it is forbidden. If sung by a man and listened to by men, and it calls to vice or indecency such as passionate love, then it is forbidden. However, if sung by a man and listened to by men, and it does not contain anything that violates modesty or chivalry, and is without musical instruments, then it is among the permissible things that a Muslim should abandon, following the example of "those who turn away from idle talk."
