Must the mother feed the poor on behalf of her deceased son who intentionally broke his fast in Ramadan, or should she fast on his behalf? And what is the amount of food that must be given? Is it permissible to give money instead of food? And should she fast one day for each day he broke his fast, or sixty days?

Scholars differ concerning one who dies having intentionally left fasts. There are two opinions:

1. One fast day is observed on behalf of the deceased for each day he missed.

2. Food equivalent to one mudd (approximately 750 grams) is given as charity for each day. Money is not sufficient.

If the number of days the deceased did not fast is unknown, then one should estimate based on what is most likely to clear his liability.
