Is a girl who deliberately broke her fast in Ramadan due to thirst required to only make up the days (qada'), or is expiation (kaffara) incumbent upon her, or both expiation and making up the days?

If fasting becomes an unbearable hardship, one is permitted to break the fast and make up for it later. However, if the hardship is bearable, breaking the fast is not permissible. Whoever intentionally breaks their fast must repent and make up for the days they missed, without expiation (kaffarah), because expiation is specific to those who invalidate their fast by sexual intercourse. If the number of days missed is unknown, one should err on the side of caution and fast a number of days that would clear their conscience.
