Is it legislated for a lone congregant to stand a little behind the Imam, even though the well-known position is to his right?

The prescribed position for a single congregant (ma'mum) is to stand to the right of the Imam, level with him. There is nothing in the Shar'i (Islamic legal) evidences to indicate otherwise.
