Is a new Muslim obligated to separate from his wife if she does not convert to Islam?
If the husband converts to Islam while his wife is Jewish or Christian, he is not obligated to separate from her. However, if his wife is neither Jewish nor Christian, the marriage contract becomes void upon his conversion to Islam. Nevertheless, she is given a grace period until the end of her waiting period (iddah). If she embraces Islam before the iddah expires, she remains his wife. Otherwise, the dissolution of the marriage is confirmed from the moment the husband embraced Islam.
