Which is more correct in prayer: reciting the Fatiha and what is easy of the Qur’an behind the Imam in audible prayer, or sufficing with listening?

Scholars have differed concerning the recitation of Al-Fatihah by the worshipper led by the Imam in congregational loud prayers. Some are of the view that it is sufficient to listen attentively to the Imam, while others are of the view that only the recitation of Al-Fatihah is obligatory.

The most cautious approach is to recite Al-Fatihah, due to the general saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "There is no prayer for one who does not recite the Opening of the Book (Al-Fatihah)," and his saying, peace and blessings be upon him: "Whoever performs a prayer and does not recite the Mother of the Qur'an (Al-Fatihah) in it, then it is deficient," and due to the saying of Abu Hurairah: "Recite it to yourself, O Persian."

Whereas those who say that its recitation is not obligatory have based their argument on the Almighty's saying: "And when the Qur’an is recited, then listen to it and pay attention that you may receive mercy," and the Prophet's saying, peace and blessings be upon him: "The Imam is appointed to be followed, so when he says 'Allahu Akbar', then say 'Allahu Akbar,' and when he recites, then listen attentively."

Indeed, people ceased reciting with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, in the prayers where he recited aloud, when they heard his saying: "What is wrong with me? I am being contended over the Qur'an."
