How can the verse of abrogation—"Whatever a verse We abrogate or cause to be forgotten, We bring that which is better than it or the like thereof. Do you not know that Allah is over all things competent?" (Quran 2:106)—be reconciled with what is said about the domestic fowl eating the verse of stoning without it being abrogated or something better coming in its stead?

The wording of the verse of stoning (rajm) has been abrogated, but its ruling remains. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, carried out stoning, and the Companions carried it out after him. Umar ibn al-Khattab affirmed this and clarified that the verse of stoning was among what was revealed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. The incident of the domestic fowl eating the parchment has no connection to the issue of the abrogation of the verse of stoning, as that occurred after its abrogation.
