Is the fast of one who ate suhoor after dawn broke, due to a mistake in the clock's timing, permissible?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The scholars differed regarding someone who ate or drank believing it was still night, but then it became clear that dawn had broken, holding two opinions: The majority of scholars hold that making up the fast (qada') is obligatory, while groups among the Salaf, like Ibn Taymiyyah, hold that making it up is not obligatory. Ibn Taymiyyah views this as the sounder and more congruent opinion with the fundamental principles of Sharia, based on indications from the Qur'an and Sunnah, and that Allah has lifted accountability from the forgetful and the mistaken. Nevertheless, making up the fast is more cautious and more absolving for one's responsibility.
