Is ghusl obligatory after seeing semen on undergarments before sleep, then finding no trace of it upon waking?

If a person ascertains the emission of semen with desire before sleeping, ritual purification (ghusl) becomes obligatory, even if he does not see it upon waking. However, if semen is emitted without desire, the majority of scholars hold that ghusl is not obligatory.
