Repentance for calumny involves remorse, abandoning the sin, and resolving never to return to it. One must also retract their false statements before those in whose presence the calumny occurred. There are two scholarly opinions regarding informing the slandered person: Some scholars obligate informing them and seeking their forgiveness, provided it does not lead to further discord. Others do not obligate informing them, deeming prayer and seeking forgiveness for them sufficient, due to the potential harm and distress that informing them might cause.
