What is the ruling on departing Arafat before sunset due to illness, weakness, or old age?
The most preponderant opinion is the obligation to remain in Arafat until sunset because the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did not depart before sunset. Deviating from this is following the tradition of the pre-Islamic era (Jahiliyyah). Whoever intentionally departs before sunset commits a sin and owes a fidyah: sacrificing a sheep to be distributed among the poor of Mecca. As for whoever does so out of ignorance, the sin is lifted from them, but the fidyah is still obligatory.
