Istighfar (seeking forgiveness) is the request for forgiveness and the concealment and overlooking of sins. It is one of the best acts of worship that Allah the Almighty has commanded in many verses, such as His saying: "And seek forgiveness of Allah. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful," and "And seek forgiveness of your Lord and then repent to Him." Allah also commanded His Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, to seek forgiveness, and this command includes his nation, as in His saying: "Then exalt [Him] with praise of your Lord and ask forgiveness of Him. Indeed, He is ever Accepting of repentance." Previous prophets, such as Adam, Noah, and Jonah, peace be upon them, sought forgiveness from their Lord. The Prophet, peace be upon him, used to seek Allah's forgiveness and repent to Him more than seventy times a day, due to its great status and numerous benefits, which include: erasing sins and removing punishment, bringing blessings and warding off afflictions, expanding the chest (relieving distress), and fostering good character and ease in interactions with people.
