Is it obligatory to destroy the questioner's own music tapes or return them to their owners? And what should the questioner do about his friend's music tape if he cannot return it to him? Is it permissible to give away relatives' belongings that they do not use to the needy without their knowledge? And what is the expiation for having done so previously?

If it is possible to remove the music from the tapes and return them to their owners so they can benefit from them, that is best. If it is not possible and harm is feared from them, then the music within them should be destroyed by any possible means. This is what the scholars have mentioned regarding musical instruments. If the questioner is unable to retrieve her tape containing music to destroy it, then there is no blame upon her. It is not permissible to take things from one's mother or sisters without their consent, and repentance for such an act is not complete except by returning the stolen item or its value, or seeking forgiveness from its owner.
