Is it permissible to break the fast in Ramadan due to severe weakness and weight loss that occurs during fasting, despite doctors confirming there is no organic disease?
Allah has permitted the breaking of the fast for the sick and the traveler. To the sick is assimilated one who fears illness from fasting. The illness that permits breaking the fast is that which increases by fasting or delays recovery, or which a healthy person fears will occur by fasting. Illness is known by the report of a trustworthy doctor or by personal experience. If the hardship is very severe, then breaking the fast is permissible; otherwise, fasting is obligatory. If the girl is unable to fast due to her weakness, she is considered like the sick, and there is no sin on whoever prevents her from fasting, and there is no obligation to make up the fast for her if she dies. However, if she is able to fast without excessive hardship, then preventing her is a sin, and making up the fast for her is legislated. Before breaking the fast, it is recommended to strive in the means that aid in fasting, such as the pre-dawn meal (suhoor), avoiding exertion, getting sufficient rest and sleep, and consulting a doctor to prescribe tonics if necessary.
