What is the ruling on yawning during prayer?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

There are two types of yawning:

The first: Voluntary yawning, which is disliked both inside and outside of prayer. It is even more disliked during prayer because it contradicts khushu' (devotional humility). The person yawning should cover their mouth, based on the hadith, "Yawning is from Satan."

The second: Involuntary yawning. A person is not held accountable for this, but they are still required to cover their mouth. Its repetition may indicate a lack of awareness of God's watchful presence, because Satan finds no place in the heart of one who is supplicating their Lord.
