What does a husband do to atone for his oath of divorce, after he said to his mother: "Divorce be upon me, as long as my wife is at her mother's house, she will not go out to your house, and as long as she is at your house, she will not go down to her mother's house"?

Swearing by divorce (Al-Hulf bi al-Talaq) is governed by the rules of conditional divorce (Ta'liq al-Talaq). If one breaks the condition, divorce occurs, according to the majority of scholars. However, Ibn Taymiyyah holds the view that if the intention behind it was to encourage or prevent something, then it does not constitute a divorce; rather, it is an oath (yamin) that necessitates an expiation for breaking an oath (kaffarat yamin).
