Should one perform the prostration of forgetfulness (sujud al-sahw) if they accidentally omitted a pillar (rukn) while leading a congregational prayer?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

If the worshiper (ma'mum) forgets a pillar (rukn) of prayer and does not perform it, the rak'ah in which he missed the pillar becomes invalid. He must perform it after the Imam concludes the prayer, and then perform the prostration of forgetfulness (sujud as-sahw). The Hanafis, Malikis, and Shafi'is are of the opinion that it is obligatory to perform the missed pillar, with the prostration of forgetfulness being waived. The most authoritative view on this matter is that of the Hanbalis.
