How can one overcome obsessive thoughts about intention in prayer, which have led to missing prayers and Friday congregational prayer? What is the Islamic ruling on someone who intends to pray but feels overwhelmed by the need for extreme focus? And is it valid to adopt practical solutions to overcome these obsessive thoughts while trusting that Allah will accept the prayer?
Waswasah (obsessive whispering) is an illness caused by Satan and psychological or educational factors. To treat it, one must: 1. Sincerely turn to Allah. 2. Frequently recite the Qur'an and perform dhikr (remembrance of Allah). 3. Seek refuge with Allah from Satan and turn away from his whispers, for the best cure for them is not to succumb to them. 4. Be present in heart and reflect when performing acts of worship, and avoid excessively repeating actions. 5. Accompany righteous people and attend gatherings of knowledge. 6. Present the matter to scholars and students of knowledge.
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah advised patience and persistence in dhikr and prayer to combat the wiles of Satan. Ibn Hajar al-Haytami emphasized that the effective remedy for waswasah is to completely turn away from it, and that it increases for those who listen to it.
The Prophet, peace be upon him, commanded those afflicted with waswasah to seek refuge with Allah and to stop it. Imam al-Nawawi clarified the desirability of saying "La ilaha illa Allah" (There is no god but Allah) when experiencing waswasah.
