Is it permissible for an elderly, ill person who is unable to go to the mosque to have his young grandchildren lead him in prayer at home to earn the reward of congregational prayer, and is it permissible for his adult son to miss the congregational prayer at the mosque to pray with his father and earn the reward of congregational prayer?

A sick person is excused from attending congregational prayer, and it is hoped that he will receive its reward if he was accustomed to it. It is permissible for a discerning boy who performs prayer well to lead adults in prayer. Even if his grandchildren pray with him, it is permissible, and both will receive the reward of congregational prayer. If a father commands his adult son to pray with him, the son must obey him, even if it leads to delaying the prayer or missing the virtue of praying at the beginning of its time or in the mosque. Congregational prayer is not obligatory in the mosque. If the son or grandson prays in the mosque and then prays a supererogatory prayer with this man, it is permissible, and both will attain the virtue of congregational prayer.
