What is the ruling on divorcing a woman while she is menstruating, and what is the duration of her waiting period (iddah) and when does it begin?

It is not permissible for a wife to seek divorce without a legitimate Shar'i excuse. Divorce during menstruation is effective according to the majority of scholars, and this is the most preponderant and adopted opinion for fatwa. If the Sharia court rules for its occurrence, then it is effective. As for the waiting period (iddah): The waiting period for a menstruating woman is three menstrual cycles, ending upon the completion of the third cycle. The menstrual cycle during which the divorce occurred is not counted among them. The waiting period for a woman who has reached menopause is three months. The waiting period for a pregnant woman is until she delivers her entire burden (gives birth).
