The waiting period (iddah) is obligatory for a woman if her husband divorces her after being in seclusion with her, even if he did not consummate the marriage. This is the preponderant opinion and the consensus of the Companions. This is supported by the rulings of the Rightly Guided Caliphs, who decreed that the dowry (mahr) and the waiting period (iddah) are obligatory for one who drew a curtain or closed a door.
