If the wife requests Khul’ (divorce at the instance of the wife) without a legitimate Shar'i reason, she is not permitted to do so, and severe admonition will ensue. However, if the wife dislikes her husband for a legitimate reason and fears she will not fulfill his rights, she may request Khul’. The wife can be taken back twice after divorce before the expiry of her 'iddah (waiting period). The mother has a greater right to custody of the children if the conditions for custody are met, and the father must provide suitable housing for them. If the wife is divorced twice and then performs Khul’, she has no right to housing, maintenance, or clothing during the 'iddah unless she is pregnant.
