How sound is the saying, "Whoever imitates a scholar will come to God in safety?"

The saying, "Whoever imitates a scholar will meet Allah safely," is not a prophetic Hadith, and its meaning is not absolute. The imitator is safe if the scholar's opinion is preponderant, or if a weak opinion is acted upon due to necessity with its conditions, or if it is preferred by a reputable scholar. This saying has been transmitted from a number of madhhab scholars, such as Ibn al-Sarraj and Ibn Abidin, but it is conditional. Whoever imitates a trustworthy scholar in matters of Sharia due to their ignorance is excused, because they have fulfilled their obligation.
