Is it considered a sin to complete the repayment of an interest-based loan, knowing it is forbidden?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Borrowing with interest (riba) is a grave sin because the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, cursed the one who consumes riba, the one who feeds it, its scribe, and its two witnesses." And the borrower is one who feeds riba. It is obligatory for anyone who has fallen into usury to hasten to extricate themselves from it by returning the principal to the bank without any increase if they are able. If they are unable to return it without the principal, then if they are able to expedite the return of all of it and get rid of the loan, it becomes obligatory upon them to do so, for it is not permissible for a Muslim to persist in a void contract when they are able to free themselves from it.
