What should I do with a mobile phone I found in a predominantly Christian area, which I cannot identify for fear for my life, with the possibility that the device does not belong to a Christian or that the area is deserted?

If a found item is discovered in an area inhabited solely by Christians, it is permissible to hand it over to their scholar (rabbi/priest) because he is more knowledgeable about the people of his region. However, if Muslims reside in the area, or if it is probable that the found item belongs to a Muslim, then it must be announced for a full year in the place where it was found, or the nearest place its owner might reach. If the finder fears for himself, he may appoint someone else to make the announcement. If he is unable to do so himself or through a representative, he should announce it in the nearest accessible areas.
