The religious scholar is required to have sincere intentions for the sake of Allah, knowledge of the texts of the Quran and Sunnah, the ability to refer to the sources of jurisprudence within them, knowledge of issues of consensus (ijma'), mastery of the Arabic language, knowledge of the principles of jurisprudence (usul al-fiqh), understanding of the abrogating and abrogated verses (nasikh and mansukh), and the acquisition of knowledge from scholars (mashayikh).
