Deliberately swearing a false oath without a recognized necessity is among the greatest major sins and most heinous offenses. However, it is permissible to swear falsely out of necessity or for an important need that takes its place, if no other means of escape is available besides lying. But if the harm can be averted without swearing a false oath, such as by using equivocation or allusions, then lying is not permissible. If the husband will be subjected to a punishment that involves harm to him, it is permissible for him to escape that harm by lying if he cannot avert it by any other means.
