"Existential" is attributed to existence, and by it is meant the existing place. As for "nihilistic," it is attributed to nothingness, and by it is meant what was not truly existent. Usul al-Fiqh is a science that investigates the general legal evidences, how to benefit from them, and the condition of the beneficiary. How to benefit from the evidences means knowing how to derive rulings from their evidences by studying the rules of words and their connotations. The condition of the beneficiary is that of the mujtahid (independent legal reasoner).
