What is the difference between the permissible (جائز) and the impermissible (غير الجائز), the allowable (مباح), the Sunnah (سنة), the recommended (مستحب), the reprehensible (مكروه), the forbidden (محرم), the obligatory (واجب), the fard (فرض), and the rukn (ركن)?

The Permissible (Al-Ja'iz): That in which performing or refraining from an action are equal, and the accountable person has a choice between them.

The Sunnah: That which is commanded to be done, but not in an obligatory manner. Its doer is rewarded, and its ترك (abstainer) is not punished.

The Disliked (Al-Makrooh): That which is requested to be left, but not in an obligatory manner. Its abstainer is rewarded, and its doer is not punished.

The Forbidden (Al-Muharram): That which the Lawgiver has prohibited with a definitive prohibition. Its abstainer is rewarded, and its doer is punished.

The Obligatory (Al-Wajib): That which the Lawgiver has commanded with a definitive command. Reward results from its performance, and punishment from its ترك (abstention).

The Pillar (Ar-Rukn): The support and foundation of a thing; it is an internal part of it.
