What is the ruling on someone who is afflicted with obsessive whispers (waswas) regarding the intention for prayer, such that he changes his intention to a supererogatory (nafilah) prayer, then concludes it and prays the obligatory (fard) prayer? Is it permissible for him to make the intention with his heart and disregard these whispers? Is ablution valid by wiping the head with water and then the ears with different water? Does ablution become invalid by washing the hands after wiping the ears from any residues that came out of them and before washing the feet? And what is meant by transgression (al-ta'addi) in ablution?
You must disregard obsessive thoughts and pay no attention to them, because giving in to them opens a great door to evil. Therefore, one who is afflicted by obsessive thoughts should proceed with their prayer, unconcerned by the devil's whispers. As for taking new water for the ears and washing the hands after wiping them, these do not affect the validity of ablution; rather, scholars differed regarding what is preferable. Exaggeration in ablution is exceeding its limits, such as being wasteful with water or increasing the number of washings beyond three. We advise you to strive in learning the rulings of Islamic law, listening to scholarly lectures, and reading trustworthy books and fatwas to remove such ambiguities from your mind.
