What is the purpose of creating ornamental dogs, and what is the source of impurity in a dog if its owner attends to its cleanliness?

The original ruling regarding keeping animals in homes is permissibility, except for what is explicitly prohibited by evidence, such as the "dog," for which there is a confirmed prohibition against keeping it unless there is a need. It is forbidden to keep a dog for adornment. As for the wisdom behind the creation of ornamental dogs, it is like that of other creatures on Earth, and we may not comprehend the wisdom of their creation, as Allah Almighty says: (And you have not been given of knowledge except a little).

Scholars have differed concerning the impurity of dogs. The Shafi'is and Hanbalis hold that the dog is impure in all its parts. The Hanafis hold that only its flesh and saliva are impure. The Malikis, however, hold that it is pure. The impurity of the dog is a divinely ordained ruling that cannot be grasped by reason.
