What is the meaning of the Hadith: "I have learned that there are souls with you, so have you not performed Ghusl?"

Perhaps the questioner is referring to what is in Sahih Al-Bukhari, on the authority of Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her: "The companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to work for themselves, and they would have a smell. So, it was said to them: 'If only you would take a bath.'"
