How many ounces is the zakat threshold for money – estimated at 85 grams of gold?

The nisab (minimum amount upon which zakat is due) for trade goods or banknotes is approximately equivalent to 85 grams of pure gold, or approximately 595 grams of pure silver (i.e., five awqiyyah of silver). If wealth reaches either of these nisabs, zakat becomes obligatory on it. The author of Mu'jam Lughat al-Fuqaha' (Dictionary of Jurists' Terminology) defined one uqiyyah of gold as being equivalent to 29.75 grams, mentioning that it varies from country to country.
