If combining them is not possible, then feeding people and gathering to discuss religious matters is better, especially since the need for such gatherings might be greater than the need for food in some places. It is preferable for eating and gathering to take place outside the mosque, and if that is not possible, many have permitted it while maintaining the cleanliness of the mosque.
