What is the expiation for one who vowed to fast for three days, complete a reading of the Quran, and slaughter a sheep to be distributed among the poor, but then became unable to fulfill the vow due to work circumstances and financial hardship?

Whoever vows obedience must fulfill it, and expiation is not sufficient for him except in the case of an inability to fulfill that is not expected to cease. He is then required to offer an expiation for an oath, due to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "The expiation for a vow is the expiation for an oath," and his saying: "Whoever vows a vow he cannot fulfill, its expiation is the expiation for an oath."

If he is unable to fulfill the vow due to a temporary impediment whose removal is hoped for, such as an illness, he should wait for its removal, and no expiation is required of him. But if his inability persists until it becomes an inability whose removal is no longer hoped for, then expiation becomes obligatory for him.
