Is it permissible to eat the food prepared by my female relatives who do not observe cleanliness, as they take food into the toilet and touch sensitive areas without washing their hands before preparing the food?
Islam cares for cleanliness, and this includes washing hands before and after eating. It has been narrated from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that it is recommended to do so to ward off poverty and minor ailments, and to avoid harm. Despite this recommendation, ablution (wudu') is not obligatory before eating. The basic principle for foods is purity, unless one is certain of the presence of impurity. Relatives should be advised to care for legal cleanliness and to disregard obsessive thoughts of impurity.
