Is it permissible to give zakat to a student of Islamic knowledge to cover his expenses and purchase his books?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The recipients of zakat are eight categories, among them "fi sabilillah" (in the way of Allah), which scholars have interpreted as jihad, and the individual who dedicates himself to seeking religious knowledge. Such a person is given from zakat what he needs for expenses and scholarly books. Jurists have affirmed the permissibility of giving zakat to a student of knowledge if he is in dire need or has dedicated himself to religious knowledge, even if he is wealthy, provided that his dedication to knowledge prevents him from earning a livelihood, or if he cannot find the means to purchase essential scholarly books. It is also permissible to transfer zakat to a student of knowledge from one country to another.
