When is zakat due on money in a bank account, and is it to be taken from it, or from other money? Is it permissible to give it to a relative who is employed and has enough for his needs, but is indebted?

If the saved money reaches the nisab (the equivalent of 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver) and a full lunar year (hawl) passes without it decreasing, then zakat becomes obligatory, which is one-quarter of one-tenth (2.5%). It is permissible to pay zakat from money other than the saved money, according to the consensus of the Ummah. If your relative is in financial hardship and has a permissible debt, it is permissible to give your zakat money to him, as he is considered among those in debt (gharimin), and giving it to him is better, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Charity given to a poor person is one charity, but charity given to a relative is two: charity and strengthening of kinship ties." As for money gained during the year, its zakat is not obligatory with the original money; rather, a new hawl begins for it, unless it is an increase from the original capital.
